The first round: "Haruhi Suzumiya Ukiyo-e Woodblock Print Natsu-meguri 15498-kei"
This Ukiyo-e woodblock print is a commemorative item that is currently under development to celebrate both the 10th anniversary of the theatrical release of "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" and the 15th anniversary of the TV anime broadcast.
Haruhi's ukiyo-e print is based on the popular “Endless Eight” arc and features the bright red yukata worn in the series with lanterns in the background and a yagura tower that gives the piece the feeling of a summer festival. The members of the SOS Brigade can also be seen on the yagura tower.
The title of this ukiyo-e includes the number "15498," a crucial element to the “Endless Eight” story arc.

About Ukiyo-e
Ukiyo-e, or woodblock printing, emerged at the start of the Edo period and depicts the daily lives of commoners.
It gave birth to improvements in woodblock printing and advancements that allowed the printing of multiple colors.
Reading material for the masses were in high demand in Edo, the then-capital of Japan, and ukiyo-e masters became the illustrators of those highly sought after stories.
The "ukiyo" in "ukiyo-e" means "to reflect reality" and "in a contemporary style," so ukiyo-e often depict the customs of the time along with culturally significant backdrops.
This caused ukiyo-e to earn the affection of the common people as something catered towards them.
At first, the color in ukiyo-e was applied using inksticks.
However, as techniques developed, this practice was phased out and brushes were used instead.
Additionally, artists started using more colors in their works.
In order to be able to mass produce each piece, printers changed their old method of applying colors with brushes as well.
Instead, printers came up with a whole new method of production.
They carved out designs in wood, applied color to the wood itself, then printed those wooden designs on top of each other, layering as they went.
At first only a few colors were used, but as wood printing technologies improved, techniques like this were perfected, allowing the craft to further evolve and a more diverse range colors to be used.
Even outside of Japan, ukiyo-e traveled across the seas to Europe where such prints greatly influenced the cultural atmosphere in the late-19th century.
The characters in the Japanese ukiyo-e prints were very expressive, the variety of colors abundant, and creativity in the designs and patterns were quite unlike European art at that time, triggering, among others, the Japonisme art movement.
Although ukiyo-e woodblock prints are sometimes referred to“Edo woodblock prints,”this doesn't mean that woodblock printing craftsmanship originated in Edo.
As a matter of fact, nearly all of the artists at the time were based in Kyoto, where they created countless pieces during the period.
Even after Ieyasu Tokugawa moved his shogunate to Edo and the population of Tokyo exploded as a result, Kyoto continued to draw many master artists as the epicenter of the craft.
